Rwandan Life Expectancy Surges to 69.6 Years, Reveals Latest Census Data

In a groundbreaking revelation, the fifth Population and Housing Census of 2022 has unveiled a remarkable surge in the life expectancy of Rwandans, with a significant leap from 51.2 years to an impressive 69.6 years.

Fresh off the press, the National Institute of Statistics recently disclosed the latest census data, which sheds light on the progress made over the past two decades. Back in 2002, the life expectancy in Rwanda stood at 51.2 years, but the most recent census conducted last year showcased a remarkable increase to 69.6 years.

It is worth highlighting that the World Bank had previously estimated Rwanda’s life expectancy at 67 years in 2020, underscoring the nation’s remarkable strides in healthcare and well-being.

Notably, when compared to its East African counterparts, Rwanda emerges as a beacon of longevity, leading the region with an average life expectancy of 69.6 years. Tanzania follows closely at 66 years, while Kenya and Uganda stand at 63 years. Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) lag slightly behind at 61 and 60 years, respectively.

In stark contrast, South Sudan, the youngest nation in Africa, faces a considerable challenge, grappling with the lowest life expectancy in the region at 55 years.

As per the National Institute of Statistics, Rwanda’s total population has soared to an impressive 13.2 million, demonstrating a substantial increase from 10.5 million in 2012. This translates to an annual growth rate of 2.3 percent, signifying the nation’s robust demographic progress.

Furthermore, when examining gender distribution, females comprise 51.5 percent of the population, slightly outnumbering males who account for 48.5 percent.

Rwanda’s remarkable leap in life expectancy serves as a testament to the nation’s relentless efforts in healthcare advancement and socio-economic development. With this remarkable achievement, Rwanda paves the way for a healthier, more prosperous future for its citizens.
